Legislative Priorities

Agriculture is the cornerstone of Ventura County’s economy, supporting thousands of jobs throughout our region. It is also a proud part of our heritage, giving our community its unique beauty. In Congress, I have worked hard to support our farmers, farmworkers, and businesses that help feed the nation.

We have a sacred responsibility to those who have served our country in uniform. As a daughter, sister, and niece of veterans, I take no responsibility more personally and seriously. When I came to Congress, the very first committee I asked to serve on was the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee. Both here in Ventura County and at the national level, I have made it my priority to put our nation’s veterans first. That means helping our servicemembers transition back into civilian life and caring for our veterans by ensuring they all receive the timely, high-quality healthcare and benefits they have earned and deserve. It also means tackling veterans homelessness and unemployment and addressing high suicide rates that continue to plague our nation’s heroes. Finally, as more and more women join our Armed Forces and return home after their service, I’ve made it a special focus to ensure that the VA is prepared for the changing veteran demographics. Women represent the fastest-growing veteran population and the VA needs to adapt to meet their needs. That means making sure the VA offers gender-specific healthcare, addressing the unique circumstances leading to female veteran suicide, and providing critical wrap-around services like job-training, child care, and caregiver assistance. It’s long past time to recognize the contributions that all veterans, female and male, have made to our great nation.

We must invest in our nation’s infrastructure including our airports, roads, bridges, and waterways that are vital to the movement of people and goods across our country. As a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I have been working to address the infrastructure challenges facing Ventura County and the nation.

As Ventura County’s Representative in Congress, I view everything I do through the lens of how it will create jobs and grow our economy. From our ports, to our large and small businesses, to our naval base, to our agricultural community, I strive to advance federal policy that will support our diverse job creators.

The 26th District

The district includes most of Ventura County and a portion of Los Angeles County, including the cities of Oxnard, Santa Paula, Fillmore, Camarillo, Newbury Park, Moorpark, Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, Westlake Village, Agoura Hills, and Calabasas. The Trump Administration’s plan to cut over 80,000 employees at the Department of Veterans Affairs, in addition to the 2,400 VA employees who have already been terminated, is an alarming move that threatens the health and well-being of our nation’s veterans. These firings are a clear indication... that this administration is not prioritizing the needs of the men and women who have bravely served our nation in uniform and is actively undermining the quality of care they receive.

Our commitment to our veterans should never be used as a bargaining chip to advance political agendas. Supporting the men and women who have served our nation must transcend partisan ideology because supporting veterans is always the right thing to do. We must do everything in our power to serve them as well as they have served us.

Today, I was joined by Dr. Gagan Pawar, CEO of Clinicas del Camino Real, Inc., and Jenna Tosh, CEO of Planned Parenthood California Central Coast, to denounce the Republican proposal for the largest Medicaid cuts in history – jeopardizing care for millions, including over 200,000 Ventura County ...residents.

Medicaid is a cornerstone of our commitment to providing healthcare to those who need it most. Every American deserves access to timely, affordable, high-quality care. That is why I will never stop fighting to protect Medicaid – for our children, for our seniors, and for everyone who depends on it.

A great nation is only as strong as the education of its people. The Department of Education plays a vital role in ensuring that every child – regardless of their background, where they live, or their ability – has access to a quality education.

This isn’t about politics. It’s ...about the fundamental promise of America – that every child, no matter their circumstances, deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential. I refuse to stand by while Trump, a man who has never lifted a finger to support public schools, destroys the institutions that make the American Dream possible. I will fight relentlessly to protect our public schools, defend students’ rights, and ensure that education remains a national priority – not a casualty of reckless ideology.

House Democrats put forward a responsible alternative – a short-term spending bill that would have allowed time for real negotiations while safeguarding critical programs millions of Americans rely on. But instead of working toward a bipartisan solution, Republicans rammed through this extreme ...measure, ignoring the needs of the people they were elected to serve. By passing this CR, Republicans weakened Congress’ power of the purse and handed greater control over taxpayer dollars to Trump and his wealthy backers – with no oversight or guardrails.

No one wants a government shutdown, but we are headed into disastrous times. Republicans are determined to cede their power and oversight to Donald Trump, abandoning their duty to the American people and allowing these dangerous actions to go unchecked. I will continue fighting alongside House Democrats to push back against this egregious overreach of power.

House Republicans have once again failed to negotiate a bipartisan agreement that puts the needs of the American people first. Instead of working across the aisle to address our nation’s most pressing priorities, they passed a partisan Continuing Resolution that hands a blank check and unchecked ...power to the Trump administration and Elon Musk so that they can continue to gut critical public services and programs, ultimately hurting working families. House Republicans have chosen, once again, to put their loyalty to Donald Trump and Elon Musk over their responsibility to the American people.

It is with a heavy heart that I join our community in mourning the loss of Engineer Thomas “Tommy” James Daniel Minadeo, a dedicated member of the Ventura County Fire Department for nearly a decade. Even after being diagnosed with job-related cancer last year, Engineer Minadeo continued to ...serve his community with the same courage and commitment that defined his career.

His bravery, kindness, and unwavering dedication to service will never be forgotten. His legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched and the community he helped keep safe. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time as we grieve this tremendous loss.

Today marks the 45th anniversary of Channel Islands National Park – a stunning national treasure and a vital part of our community’s identity. But instead of celebrating, we’re forced to sound the alarm.

The Trump Administration’s cuts to the National Park Service and U.S. Forest ...Service are putting places like the Channel Islands – and the people who protect them – in grave danger. Over 4,000 park and forest workers have already been fired, including more than 10% of Channel Islands’ staff. These outrageous cuts mean fewer rangers, shuttered programs, and deteriorating trails and facilities.

But it’s not just our parks under threat – these cuts cripple wildfire prevention efforts, leaving our communities more vulnerable to catastrophic fires, and they gut climate protections when we need them most.

Our national parks are more than just beautiful landscapes – they are economic engines, essential ecosystems, and a core part of who we are as Americans. We cannot and will not allow this administration to dismantle and destroy them for political gain.

I will continue fighting for the dedicated public servants who protect these irreplaceable treasures. Our parks, our environment, and future generations depend on it.

Tonight, I walked out of the chamber during President Trump’s address because I could not, in good conscience, dignify a speech so detached from reality and so disrespectful to the American people.

Rather than offering real solutions to the challenges working families face every day, the... President once again chose to spread dangerous lies, sow division, and attack the very foundations of our democracy.

The American people deserve leaders who put country over party — leaders who fight for working families, defend our democracy, and tell the truth, no matter how difficult.

Tonight, Ventura County Fire Chief Dustin Gardner will join me as my guest at the Joint Session of Congress. Chief Gardner has shown unwavering dedication in protecting Ventura County during some of the most devastating wildfires and emergencies we’ve faced. His leadership has been vital not only... in Ventura County, but also in coordinating firefighting efforts across California.

Protecting our communities from wildfires and natural disasters must remain a national priority. Federal support for our firefighters and emergency responders is essential — and disaster assistance should never be politicized. When disaster strikes, communities deserve timely, effective federal support, no matter what.

I’m honored to welcome Chief Gardner and to recognize the brave firefighters and first responders across the nation who risk their lives every day to protect our communities.
